China to play active role in Rohingya repatriation: Envoy
Newly-appointed Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jiming on Wednesday said China will play an active role in the repatriation of displaced Rohingyas from Bangladesh.
He made the remarks when he met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban office, reports UNB.
PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.
“China will play a constructive and active role in the repatriation of Rohingyas,” the Press Secretary quoted the Chinese envoy as saying at the meeting.
Describing the China-Bangladesh relations as a strategic one, Li Jiming said China is working on the Rohingya issue.
The Chinese Ambassador in Naypyitaw also visited Rakhine State to see the environment on the ground, he said.
Chinese entrepreneurs are keen to make more investment in Bangladesh, the envoy said putting emphasis on mutually beneficial projects.
He lauded Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her ‘outstanding leadership’, saying, “Bangladesh has achieved a remarkable economic progress.”
Li Jiming said Awami League and Communist Party of China share the same goals.
In response, the Prime Minister said China is always supportive to Bangladesh.
About the Rohingya issue, she said the displaced Myanmar nationals are a big burden for Bangladesh.
“Myanmar should ensure their safety, security as well as create trust and confidence among Rohingyas so that they can return to their homeland,” the PM was quoted as saying.
Hasina said Bangladesh has allocated land for Chinese entrepreneurs in a special economic zone at Anwara in Chattogram.
About Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor (BCIM-EC), she said if the economic corridor is implemented, the economic activity would be more vibrant in this region as the South and South East Asia together will have a big market.
The Prime Minister appreciated Chinese assistance to different projects in Bangladesh.
Talking about the power generation, she said the power production capacity has increased to over 22,000 megawatt from only 3,200 megawatt in 2006.
Hasina said a book will be published on Bangabandhu’s China visits.
In response, the Chinese envoy said they want to translate the book into Chinese language.
Principal Secretary Md Nojibur Rahman was present.
