Bus hits home minister's car
A bus hit a car carrying Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal in Dhaka's Sher-e-Bngla Nagar area during the ongoing Traffic Week following student protests for safe roads.
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station OC Ganesh Gopal Biswas said that a bus of New Vision Paribahan hit the minister's car from behind near College Gate bus stop around 9:30pm on Friday.
The driver’s assistant was behind the wheel during the incident, the OC said.
“We’ve arrested both of them. Preparations to start a case against them are under way,” he told bdnews24.com.
The home minister was unharmed but the backside of his car was damaged slightly, the ministry’s Public Relations Officer Sharif Mahmud Apu said.
Kamal was going to Nakhalparha to attend an event after visiting a patient at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases. That was when the Motijheel-bound bus from Mirpur hit his car, the ministry’s PRO said.
The minister left the area in his car while the bus has been seized, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station Sub-Inspector Yadul Haque said.
He identified the driver as Ibrahim Khalil Emon and his assistant as ‘Manik’.
The government announced the Traffic Week to bolster road safety measures on Aug 5 amidst the student movement triggered by deaths of two of their peers under the wheels of a bus in Dhaka on July 29.
The protesters also enforced traffic rules by measures such as catching drivers without licence, unfit vehicles and forcing the drivers to drive on separate lanes for different types of vehicles.
Police started 113,423 cases for violation of traffic rules across Bangladesh in six days of the Traffic Week.
