Brief fire incident at Shahjalal Airport from short circuit
Dhaka : A fire has erupted at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport's departure terminal in , filling the area with smoke and leading the authorities to evacuate passengers halting immigration services for around half an hour.
Fire Service officials said an accidental electric malfunction caused the fire on the first floor of the Terminal – 2 around 6pm on July 15.
Several units of firetrucks rushed to the site of occurrence after smoke left passengers and officials in panic near the immigration office.
Police officer described that the entire airport was filled with smoke and power supply has been switched off. Immigration services were also halted.
Several airport employees said that smoke started spreading around 6pm all around the terminal from the immigration section. Airport authorities then instructed all waiting passengers to leave the terminal immediately.
The airport is experiencing heavy traffic due to the Hajj flights that started from Saturday.
Airport Director Group Captain Abdullah Al Farooq confirmed that there is no fire. It was just smoke that spread all over the terminal.
The director of the CAA said: “Everything is normal. Airlines operations and immigration resumed normal services.”
Armed Police Battalion Commanding Officer Rashedul Islam, who was on duty at the airport, also said no fire was seen.
Fire Service and Civil Defence Director General Mohammad Ali later said that an electric malfunction caused the fire and smoke on the ceiling of the floor.
