59 Chinese apps, including TikTok, Shareit banned as #BoycottChina goes official
The federal government has banned 59 Chinese apps, including hugely popular types like the social short video application TikTok and the sharing platform Shareit, following standoff with the Chinese forces in Ladakh.
A news release issued by the Ministry of IT said it had been invoking its power in Section 69A good of the Information Technology Act, read with the relevant provisions of the info Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Consumer) Rules 2009 to ban 59 apps.
The applications were engaged in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order, it said.
The ministry said it had received several complaints from various sources, including citizens, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center and the Computer Crisis Response Team (CERT-Found in) that some mobile programs were stealing and surreptitiously transmitting user info to servers placed outside India. , and therefore decided to act.
“There has been a strong chorus in the general public space to take strict action against software that harm India’s sovereignty along with the privacy of our citizens,” the news release said, adding that the federal government therefore decided to disallow the utilization of the apps.
