Los Blancos made a lively start after being initially being awarded a penalty on four minutes for Alejandro Balde's foul on Vinicius, but after a Video Assistant Referee review (VAR), the decision was overturned.

The hosts had the ball in the back of the net on 11 minutes when the in-form Mbappe looked to have bagged his 11th league goal of the season with a superb first-time volley from distance, but the celebrations were cut short as VAR spotted an offside. Mbappe and Madrid were not to be denied in the 22nd minute when the Frenchman latched onto a superb pass from Jude Bellingham before calmly slotting past goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny for his 11th goal in the Spanish top-flight this season.

After a slow start to the contest, Barcelona pulled themselves level in the 38th minute as Marcus Rashford raced into the box and did well to pick out Fermin Lopez, who volleyed into the back of the net.

Barcelona's joy was short-lived as Los Blancos restored their lead on 42 minutes when Eder Militao rose above his marker to head Vinicius' cross to the far post, where Bellingham was on hand to slot home.

Madrid were given the chance to extend their lead five minutes after the break from the penalty spot following a VAR review. Mbappe stepped up but saw his spot-kick tipped over the crossbar by Szczęsny.

Coach Xabi Alonso opted for a change on 72 minutes by introducing Rodrygo in place of Vinicius, who was not happy with the decision and stormed off down the tunnel in frustration.

Los Blancos kept pushing for more goals as they had the ball in the back of the net a few minutes later when Bellingham fired home close range, however the goal was ruled out for an offside in the build up.

Barcelona were unable to find a way back into the contest, while they also finished the game with ten players after Pedri was sent off in time added on for picking up a second yellow card, with Los Blancos walking away with a win.
