The Red Devils gave Benjamin Sesko his first start in the league in place of the injured Matheus Cunha, while City manager Pep Guardiola handed goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma his first appearance after signing on the final day of the transfer window.

After a lively start, it was City who broke the deadlock on 17 minutes when Jeremy Doku burst into the box before picking out Foden, who sent a fine header into the far corner to open his account for the season. United should have restored the parity in the 28th minute when Manuel Ugarte picked out the run of Bryan Mbuemo, who raced clear on goal but sent his effort well over the target with only Donnarumma to beat in the box.

That proved to be the final chance for the visitors in the first half, although Sesko and Mbeumo remained a threat whenever Ruben Amorim's charges did break forward.

However, City doubled their lead eight minutes after the break when Doku turned provider to play in Erling Haaland, who lobbed the ball over the on-rushing Altay Bayındır for his fourth league goal of the campaign.

Amorim responded with a double change for the Red Devils as Lenny Yoro and Noussair Mazraoui made way for Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire.

It got worse for the Red Devils on 68 minutes when City extended their lead after Bernardo Silva sent Haaland through on goal from inside his own half, with the Norwegian showing the composure to slot home his second on the day.

The Red Devils did see a lot of the ball in the closing stages but were unable to find a way past Donnarumma, who managed to register a clean sheet and a win on his City debut.
